Because to argue with someone you need atleast two people.
However, it's not always foolish to argue with a fool.
In the end, all humans were devoid of intelligence once;
You need a teacher to make a teacher.

..a sentence like this reeks of being pretentious.

I saw somewhere else long ago (by i forget who) a similar idea:
Never argue with an idiot. They'll just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
